by Tanya Shih, Fastener World Inc.

In the 17th Member Assembly of Taiwan Industrial Fasteners Institute (TIFI) held on December 19, 2014, Huei-Jeng Lin, President C.H. Chuang of Fong Yien Industrial, and President Y.Y. Tsai of Jinn Her Enterprise, both nominated for vice presidents of TIFI, have become the strongest support for new TIFI Chairman Anchor T.H. Chang and voice for Taiwanese fastener industry.

But who is Huei-Jeng Lin? Up to this point after the Assembly, a few people are still unfamiliar with his name. He is the new board chairman of Chun Yu Works & Co., Ltd and the incumbent vice chairman of TIFI.

How Does the New Leader with Only 1.5 Years’ Experience Manage a Company
with 2,000 Employees?

Before Lin’s entry into Chun Yu, his asset management company had held the shares of Ofco Industrial and Chun Yu, both of which are fastener giants. He would have never thought that one day he would lead a fastener company in person. On the day of this interview at Lin’s office, it was quite a surprise to find that Lin did not look like a serious, prim, and professional manager but a man with humble, easy-going and bookish personalities. He was once a college principal, a professor, and a chief commissioner before he becomes the chairman of Chun Yu’s board of directors

Implementing Professional Manager System

Lin, the academic giant in wind power and heavy engineering, has only 1.5 years of experience in the fastener industry, but he precisely describes the current situation of Taiwanese fastener industry, “The government ought to act actively, build a fair and competitive market environment for the industry, and prevent bad money from driving out good.” His description corresponds to the four standards that influence the fastener industry, which are electricity price, steel price, environment protection, and exchange rate.

In Lin’s words, “Chun Yu is a healthy company with visions for market deployment. As a publicly traded company we must be responsible for our investors and ensure the compliance of each manufacturing process with government regulations. Accordingly, we were not affected by the closures of some Taiwanese electroplating plants in 2014. Given the fact that the closures have brought impact to the whole industry, we think the government should take both the policies and the survival of industry into account when it starts to act proactively on a certain issue.”

Speaking of his temporary transfer to Chun Yun, Lin said frankly, “This is the practical action that Chun Yu takes to put the professional manager system into force. I can exert my specialty to any technical aspect regarding materials and production, but I think it is better to know corporate management than to just know how to produce fasteners, and knowing how to do business is even better than knowing corporate management.” He added, “To be a qualified business doer means to make clients recognize Chun Yu’s product quality, corporate value, and professional service form the bottom of their hearts. I am still learning to do business, but before that, I must know about management. This is the responsibility of a professional manager and a management team. Below I will explain how to turn the capital into profit in two aspects.”

Product Optimization for International Market Expansion

Chun Yu specializes in high value added fasteners and spheroidized wires for vehicles, railways, construction, electronics, manufacturing, aerospace, green energy, chain belts and so on. In addition to automotive and European construction fastener certificates like ISO 9001, TS 16949, EN14566, and EN 14592, Chun Yu has been also certified by AS 9100, the aerospace-grade certificate. Lin said, “Based on different cultures in Chun Yu’s operations worldwide, the company continues to optimize products in conjunction with its manufacturing strategy. For example, Chun Yu strengthens its trade of fasteners and cold forging machines in one hand, and optimizes design, production, and marketing of fasteners in another hand, making the company more competitive in the future. ”

Diversified Use of Chun Yu’s Assets

“There are tangible and intangible assets. The former can refer to techniques, equipment and land, and there are always enough orders to replenish each manufacturing equipment. Besides upgrading techniques, you can also come up with ways to combine existing techniques with different industries. The brand name is the most valuable and intangible asset to Chun Yu. It symbolizes not only the spirit of Chun Yu but also the beginning of Taiwanese fastener industry.” Obviously, Lin has put a lot of efforts. Then, he said, “Up to 80% of Chun Yu’s staff have direct or indirect experience in Taiwanese fastener industry. I think Taiwan’s fastener kingdom wouldn’t have existed without the contribution of an extraordinary character, Mr. Chun Yu Lin. We should even call him the “Father of Taiwanese Fasteners.” These words are the best testimonials as a respect for Chun Yu Lin.

With 1.5 years of experience in the industry, Lin further reveals the key to Chun Yu’s current profit gain, “In the short term, Chun Yu will not have major investments such as increasing overseas bases. The first and foremost is to achieve profit gain in each and every branch! After announcing the target of profit gain, we will give managers in all of our bases the biggest possible authority to make strategy for the target. This is the most critical mission of my job in Chun Yu.” Regarding the possibility of further cooperation between Ofco and Chun Yu, Lin said, “Ofco mainly produces standard fasteners, while Chun Yu produces high level fasteners and wires for high-speed railways, cars, and large buildings. Their clients do not overlap, and they complement each other in business running. This is beneficial to the growth of both companies.”

Fulfilling Social Responsibility is How a Company Can Sustain

Lin shared a lot about the 1.5 years in the fastener industry where he turned from a scholar into an industry player, “Almost all labors in the manufacturing and service industry have families to take care of. My biggest concern as an owner is how to ensure stable incomes and fringe benefits for my employees. A company has to gain profit to sustain. This is the social responsibility of an owner.”

Lin’s 2015 Perspective: “Major Markets Will Shift But Demand Still Exists”

At the end of the interview, Lin thanked Chairman Anchor T.H. Chang for his invitation, which shows Chang’s respect and support for Chun Yu. Analyzing the fastener industry in 2015, Lin said, “The industrial performance in 2015 will not be too bad because fasteners are essential in every industry. We see the first wave of demand growth in the booming U.S. real estates and automotive market. Major fastener markets will shift in sync with political and economic factors around the world, but the fastener demand still exists. Therefore, we must follow closely with the trend of global demand.”
