2020-04-20
Swedish automotive industry halted its production nationwide last month due to the COVID-19 outbreak, however, now some of the leading vehicle manufacturers in Sweden (e.g. Volvo Cars, Scania, and Volvo Buses) have planned to resume their operations.

Volvo Cars has scheduled to resume its production of certain parts of car bodies on April 20th, while Scania has planned to activate its short-term operation resumption on April 21st. In addition, Volvo Buses has also planned to reactivate its engine manufacturing lines. According to the spokesman of Volvo Buses Claes Eliasson, Volvo Buses will only implement quite limited operation resumption and will only focus on engine manufacturing, and the date for restoring all capacities is still yet to be determined.

So far, Swedish car manufacturing industry is still suffering shutdowns of factories throughout the country and the biggest challenge is how to get the parts and components of suppliers located in other European countries. Another issue is the weak demand in the automotive market, and these companies in Sweden are considering to what extent their operations can be resumed. After the resumption, how to adjust the work environment in order to prevent employees from getting infected by the virus is also one of the biggest challenges to the companies.
