The escalating U.S.-Canada trade dispute is raising concerns among small businesses over higher costs and weaker demand. The United States imposed 50% tariffs on about $27.6 billion of Canadian goods effective Aug. 22, with measures covering products in sectors including steel and aluminum.

Hardware retailers say tariff-related cost increases are already affecting products such as screws, wire, plastic goods and building materials. Jesse Prager, owner of Rittenhouse Hardware, said higher material costs are forcing retailers to raise prices, but excessive increases could eventually reduce consumer demand and pressure business margins. Plywood tariffs could also affect construction activity, potentially reducing demand for related hardware such as screws and caulk.

Businesses seeking U.S.-made alternatives may face limited options, while domestic products can also become more expensive when their raw materials are subject to tariffs. Canada responded on Sept. 8 with 15%, 25% and 50% counter-tariffs covering about $27.6 billion of U.S. imports, targeting sectors including steel, appliances, agricultural equipment and electronics.
