Taiwan's NDC Announces Taiwan 2030 Carbon Reduction Target to Reach at Least 30%

In 2022, Taiwan's National Development Council (NDC) announced "Taiwan 2050 Net Zero Emissions Approach and General Strategy Description", which not only proposes specific action plans for "12 Key Strategies", but also reveals four major transformations, including "Energy Transformation", "Industrial Transformation", "Life Transformation", and "Social Transformation". It is estimated that the total investment will be about NTD880 billion.

However, previously The United Nations Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) proposed to reach a target of 43% carbon reduction by 2030, and other countries around the world have also set targets higher than this standard. In contrast, Taiwan is still below the UN's target. Taiwan's current 2030 carbon reduction target is only set at 20%, a large gap from the UN standard. Therefore, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency, Taiwan) said it will raise this target.

On December 28, 2022, Taiwan's NDC announced 12 key strategic implementation plans for "2050 Net Zero Approach", of which the focus of attention is that Taiwan's 2030 carbon reduction target will be more refined; it is reported that the target will be raised by at least 10%, to reach the goal of 30% carbon reduction.

Taiwan's original emission reduction target was set at 268 million tons in 2005 as the base year, 2% carbon reduction in 2020, 10% carbon reduction in 2025, 20% carbon reduction in 2030, but in response to the international goal of net zero emissions by 2050, the 2030 milestone will be more refined.
